Greens seeking local council pacts

Green Party leader, Trevor Sargent has said he is seeking a meeting with Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny and Labour leader, Pat Rabbitte to discuss co-operation on local councils.

The Dublin North TD said: “The Green Party would like to see civic alliances formed on local authorities where the Greens, Fine Gael, Labour and independents make up a majority.

“This is all part of the Green Party’s strategy as set out in our local election manifesto where we pledged to draw up programmes for local government.

“The Greens will be looking to push specific policy areas as part of these programmes.

“For example, a greater emphasis on recycling and the introduction of new public transport initiatives, new playgrounds and parks and investigating the possibility of a greater role for local authorities in the provision of education and health services.”
