NI city centres gets £2m CCTV security upgrade

New CCTV systems are to be installed in a £2m (€3m) offensive against town centre crime in Northern Ireland, it was revealed today.

Extra security cameras will be erected as part of a developing scheme to identity vandals and shoplifters.

The North's Criminal Justice Minister John Spellar pledged no let up in the fight against crime.

He said: “This £2m boost will help areas across Northern Ireland become safer places to work, visit or spend leisure time.

“CCTV has also played a significant part in contributing to a more active night-time economy and the regeneration of town centres.”

The cash will be used to strengthen existing schemes set up in 19 town centres across Northern Ireland as well as introducing new systems.
