The Green Party has reacted angrily to news the British government has failed to meet an EU deadline for outlining how it plans to clean up a radioactive site at Sellafield.

Reports today said Britain was due to present an action plan on cleaning up the B30 open-air containment pond before June 1, but the document had yet to be received by the European Commission.

Green Party spokesman John Gormley said: “This is par for the course now for Sellafield. They have an appalling track record, we know that they have engaged in cover-ups and that the emissions into the Irish Sea continue.

"This obviously poses a serious threat to the health of the Irish people and it really is about time now that the Irish Government took this problem seriously.”
