Ahern urged to honour debt commitments

A group campaigning for international debt relief has called on the Taoiseach to live up to his commitments on the cancellation of Third World debt.

The Debt and Development Coalition made the call as Bertie Ahern prepares to represent the EU at a G8 summit in the United States this week.

The coalition, which is planning to hold a protest on Dublin’s Grafton Street this afternoon, said Mr Ahern should live up to Ireland’s promise to put the issue of debt cancellation on the international agenda.

Spokesman Pat Raleigh said the issue was not just about economics, as millions of people’s lives were at stake.
