Govt urged to let Iraqi torture victims come to Ireland

The Irish Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Survivors has called on the Government to allow the victims of US torture in Iraqi prisons to come to Ireland for treatment.

The Irish Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Survivors has called on the Government to allow the victims of US torture in Iraqi prisons to come to Ireland for treatment.

Dr Chris Neilson, who founded the centre, said the Government was partly responsible for prison abuses in Iraq because it allowed US military to use Shannon Airport as part of its war against Iraq.

Dr Neilson, a former South African political prisoner, said Irish doctors had experience treating refugees who had suffered torture in their home countries.
