Ahern to raise Irishmen’s case with Colombian President
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is expected to raise the case of the so-called Colombian Three when he meets Colombian President Alvaro Uribe at an EU-Latin America summit in Mexico this weekend.
James Connolly, Martin McCauley and Niall Connolly were acquitted of training anti-government rebels in bomb-making techniques earlier this year, but have been ordered to remain in the country pending the outcome of an appeal.
They are free to leave prison until the appeal is heard, but have opted not to do so because the Colombian Authorities have refused to provide them with protection.
