Ireland to host transplant games

Almost 20 countries are to take part in the forthcoming European Heart and Lung Transplant Games in Dublin, it was confirmed today.

Over 500 competitors and supporters from 18 countries across Europe will converge on the city next month in the first time the games have been staged in Ireland.

President Mary McAleese, patron of the Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association, will officially open the 10th Games on June 23.

A total of 45 Irish transplant recipients will be among those competing in a range of sporting disciplines during the five-day event, including athletics, swimming, tennis and cycling.

Malcolm Banks, Chairman of the Games Organising Committee, paid tribute to those who had been involved in ensuring the event was held in Ireland.

“We have chosen some excellent venues in which to hold the competitions, including the National Aquatic Centre, Morton Stadium, the David Lloyd Tennis Centre, and Edmondstown Golf Club,” he said.

“We have received great support and practical help from all the National Sporting Organisations, for which we are extremely grateful.

“I would also like to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers who have signed up to help in the running of our Games.”

The event follows hot on the heels of last year’s massively successful Special Olympics.
