More than 500 mortgage customers of Allied Irish Banks may be due refunds after claims that they were charged payment protection without prior approval.

Although the AIB has said the issue relates to less than 1% of mortgage customers, it comes at a sensitive time for the bank. The Irish Financial Services Regulatory Authority (IFSRA) is investigating the AIB over foreign exchange transaction over-charging.
