DPP delays report on Dublin bus crash

The publication of the report into a bus crash which killed five people in Dublin is to be delayed at the request of the Director of Public Prosecutions, it emerged tonight.

Three men and two women were killed and 20 others injured when an out-of-service bus went out of control on the city’s Wellington Quay in February.

A spokeswoman for Dublin Bus said the company received a letter from the DPP yesterday requesting the report be delayed until his office concluded its deliberations.

“We consider that we must accede to that request, and accordingly the report will not become available until a later date,” she said.

The spokeswoman said the decision was taken following consultation between CIÉ Chairman Dr John Lynch, Managing Director Alan R Westwell and the chairman of the inquiry committee, Arnold O’Byrne.

“The company would like to express its sincere regrets to the families of the bereaved and to those injured and their families for the delay in publishing the report,” she said.

“We fully recognise their need to be informed of all the circumstances of the tragedy, and we will release the report as soon as that becomes possible.

“In the meantime Dublin bus will continue to provide support and assistance to those affected by the tragedy at Wellington Quay.”
