A team of Garda detectives was drafted to Limerick today to investigate the shooting of a former city councillor.

Former alderman Michael Kelly was fighting for his life in hospital after being admitted with a gunshot wound to the head.

Mr Kelly, who resigned his seat in 2002, was rushed to Limerick Regional Hospital by ambulance this morning.

A spokesman for the Mid-Western Regional Health Authority said the former alderman was in a critical condition.

Garda Inspector Gerry McNamara of Roxboro Road Station said his officers were seeking those responsible for the shooting.

Inspector McNamara said the shots were fired at around 8.30am at a house in Lilac Court in the Southill area.

He said the scene had been preserved for technical examination.

The team of detectives and forensic scientists from Dublin was called to assist Roxboro detectives in their searches and inquiries in the Southill area.

The attack is the second time Mr Kelly has been shot.

He recovered from pellet wounds to his stomach after shots were fired as he opened the door to his home in February 2002.

The controversial alderman was found guilty of VAT and income tax fraud after an investigation by the Criminal Assets Bureau.

Mr Kelly, who has over 30 previous convictions, was a high-profile council member for three years.

He had earlier spent around 12 years in prison for a variety of criminal offences.

The Limerick man was also the subject of a 1995 RTE documentary called ‘The Hard Man’ which looked at his life and time spent in prison.

In his time in the council he had been vocal on matters relating to Southill and other communities, bringing up litter and housing conditions.
