Greens call for EU junk food ads ban

The Green Party has called for an EU-wide ban on junk food advertising in an effort to combat growing obesity levels, particularly among young people.

The party made the call at the beginning of an international conference in Dublin today aimed at promoting healthier diets.

Irish Green Party leader, Trevor Sergeant, said obesity was one of Ireland’s fastest growing health problems, but the Government was doing nothing to address it.

Mr Sergeant also called for Ireland to be declared a GM-free zone.
