Minister for the Marine, Dermot Ahern, today announced a new plan to save the lives of thousands of dolphins killed in fishing nets.

The EU-agreed scheme will see a number of new measures, including ‘pingers’ on nets, being put in place to protect dolphins from getting caught in driftnets.

As many as 10,000 dolphins are killed in the North Sea each year. Dermot Ahern says the new initiative will place the onus on the fishing industry to protect this species.
