McDowell prison plan meets with opposition

The Irish Penal Reform Trust has criticised Justice Minister Michael McDowell’s plans to expand the capacity of Irish prisons and introduce mandatory minimum sentencing for firearms offences.

Mr McDowell announced the plans last night in a speech to the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors in Cork.
