Gilmartin accuses Redmond of costing Dublin 20,000 jobs

Property developer Tom Gilmartin has accused former assistant Dublin city and county manager George Redmond of depriving the Clondalkin area of 20,000 jobs through extortion and corruption.

Mr Gilmartin made the accusation while being cross-examined by Mr Redmond at the Mahon Tribunal today.

The property developer said Mr Redmond interfered in deals he was negotiating with the local authorities in relation to the acquisition of land in west Dublin for his planned Quarryvale development in the late 1980s.

Mr Gilmartin said today that Mr Redmond "kicked up a stink" inside Dublin Corporation and accused honest valuers and negotiators of being corrupt.

The property developer claimed Mr Redmond was on the payroll of a rival firm, Green Properties, and encouraged it to make spurious offers for land in west Dublin to frustrate the Quarryvale development.

He said this was part of a game Mr Redmond and former Fianna Fáil TD Liam Lawlor started playing when they realised there was no point in pursuing him for money.
