Dublin-Monaghan bombings report due later

The Dáil Committee on Justice will announce this evening if there's to be a full public inquiry into the Dublin and Monaghan bombings.

The Dáil justice committee is due to issue its report on the Dublin and Monaghan later today.

The committee was asked last year to decide if a full public inquiry into the atrocity was warranted.

Thirty-three people died when loyalist paramilitaries detonated three car bombs in Dublin and one in Monaghan on May 17, 1974.

There have long been suspicions that the British security services helped those responsible for the attacks, but the Barron Inquiry into the matter failed to uncover any concrete evidence of such collusion.

The Dáil justice committee is expected to stop short of recommending a full public inquiry, but may call for new investigation headed by an international judge from outside Ireland and Britain.
