Learner drivers are now waiting an average of 40 weeks to be tested, according to the AA.

Learner drivers are now waiting an average of 40 weeks to be tested, according to the AA.

The longest queue in the country is in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford where it is 14 months long.

There are 300,000 provisional licence holders on the roads which the AA believes must lead to worse road safety.

Spokesman Conor Faughnan said a radical approach is needed.
