Experts warn about timing of e-voting

Computer experts have warned that the new electronic voting system poses a danger to Irish democracy.

The Government plans to introduce the new high tech system for the local elections in June.

But the Irish Citizens for Trustworthy E-Voting group has said it would be highly irresponsible to run an electronic ballot in less than three months time.

The group claims it is not against electronic voting but has serious reservations about using an insecure system that has yet to be thoroughly checked for flaws.

Computer consultant Joe McCarthy has questioned the Government's determination to press ahead with the e-vote when there are so many doubts.

Mr McCarthy has said: “It is technically flawed, they need primary legalisation to allow it to be used in the first place, it costs a fortune and the people don’t trust it already.”
