Snow causes chaos on Northern roads

Motorists in Northern Ireland were facing a treacherous drive into work and school after heavy snow fell overnight.

Road Service officials were urging drivers to proceed with extreme care on roads right across the North, but especially in Mid Ulster.

Magherafelt, Cookstown, Craigavon and Dungannon appeared to be among the worst affected areas.

People were also being asked to avoid the Mountain Road between Coleraine and Limavady where a lorry had broken down.

A road accident had also closed the Hillhall Road in Co Antrim, between Lisburne and the Belvoir area of Belfast.

The Glenshane Pass on the road between Belfast and Derry was passable but motorists were being asked to take extreme care.

Road Service workers were also working hard to ensure that motorways were still functional but were also urging caution.

The public transport company Translink was also advising passengers that they should prepare for delays of between 10 and 15 minutes for all its services in the North.
