Students need computers and connection, says FG
Fine Gael Education spokeswoman Olwyn Enright has today welcomed the announcement that schools are to have broadband internet access, but called on the Minister for Education to ensure that schools have the right equipment to utilise these connections properly.
“I welcome the announcement that primary and secondary schools throughout the country are to have broadband connection to the internet.
“However, in order to exploit this broadband connection, schools must have a proper supply of up-to-date computer equipment.
“The average pupil / computer ratio, at 13 to 1, is both worrying and disappointing. The 3-year ICT programme to equip schools with computer equipment finished last year, and funding for new equipment has now been cut considerably.
"Minister Dempsey must now outline if a new programme will be put in place, and when that will happen," said Deputy Enright.
“It’s one thing to constantly repeat the mantra that Ireland needs a highly skilled workforce. If the Government accepts that our young people must be highly capable when it comes to Information Technology, then they must put the necessary infrastructure in place, and this means starting with computers in schools.
“I welcome today’s announcement, but this must be followed with significant investment in computer equipment at schools throughout the country. Otherwise, schools may have connections but students still won’t have access.”
