UDA begins internal debate on alleged ceasefire

The Ulster Defence Association has begun an internal debate on the status of its alleged ceasefire, according to the political wing of the organisation.

Frankie Gallagher, a spokesman for the UDA-linked Ulster Political Research Group, said the paramilitary organisation is considering whether to extend a ceasefire declared around a year ago.

The alleged ceasefire has failed to halt UDA attacks on the homes of prison officers and Catholic civilians, and the British government has refused to recognise it as a genuine cessation.

SDLP spokesman Alban Maginness said today that the alleged ceasefire was a pretence and a farce.
