One in eight drinkers will visit pubs less often following the introduction of the Government’s workplace smoking ban, according to a poll published this morning.

However, 28% of respondents to the TNS/MRBI poll said they would visit pubs more frequently following the introduction of the ban.

Thirty eight per cent also said they were more likely to have a meal in a pub after the ban comes into force.

Publicans opposed to the ban had claimed that it would lead to a 30% drop in business.

Health Minister Micheal Martin announced yesterday that the ban will take effect from March 29, almost three months after it was originally due to be introduced.

Smokers caught breaching the ban will face a fine of up to €3,000.

Reports this morning said publicans had threatened to launch a legal challenge to the measure.

The Irish Cigarette Machine Operators Association is also apparently considering legal action as the ban is likely to have a devastating effect on its members’ livelihoods.
