The British Ambassador to Ireland has rejected reports that a visit to Ireland today by Princess Anne is designed to pave the way for an eventual state visit by Queen Elizabeth II.

Stewart Eldon said there was no plans for such a visit.

Queen Elizabeth has never visited the Republic of Ireland.

Her daughter, Princess Anne, is due in the country today to meet President Mary McAleese.
