New minimum wage comes into effect

A new minimum wage comes into effect this morning.

The rate is going up from €6.35 per hour to €7.

The 10% rise, negotiated as part of the Programme for Sustaining Progress last year, is the third increase in four years.

The hike was agreed by the Congress of Trade Unions and the Business and Employers’ Confederation as part of a national pay agreement last year.

Labour Affairs Minister Frank Fahey said: “Inspections carried out by my department have shown a high level of compliance with the provisions of the National Minimum Wage Act.

“Labour inspectors will be checking over the coming weeks to ensure compliance with the increased rates.”
