There has been a warning that rural areas could be left without pharmacy services, if the Government doesn't step in to safeguard the industry.

The Irish Pharmaceutical Industry, which represents over 1,400 pharmacists in the country, says there's a danger that pharmacy services could be confined to large urban areas if consolidation of the industry continues.

Richard Collis from the Irish Pharmaceutical Union says smaller pharmacies are not able to compete with larger outlets.
