DUP: African women arriving in NI at point of birth to claim citizenship

The DUP’s Health Spokesperson, Iris Robinson, claims a midwife told her that pregnant African women were arriving in the North to give birth, to claim British citizenship for their babies.

She claimed that some women arrive at the point of birth and this puts huge pressure on the Health service.

However, the health department and hospitals deny the claims.

The SDLP’s Patricia Lewsley said she found the claim hard to believe and that such unsubstantiated claims are fuelling the upsurge in racist attacks.

She said: "Pregnant women from ethnic minorities will suffer, because the mindless thugs will assume that’s why they’re in the North."
