Solana calls for greater EU security co-operation

EU foreign policy envoy Javier Solana has called for stronger security co-operation among EU member states.

Mr Solana made the call while outlining details of the EU’s new security strategy at the Forum on Europe in Dublin today.

Mr Solana said the strategy was designed to ensure that the EU could respond quickly to any security threats.

He said security depended on effective multilateralism and emphasised the UN’s importance in achieving global security.

Mr Solana also said the EU’s partnership with the US was vital, but he added that the US should not act unilaterally in the area of global security.
