NBRU threatens fresh action over proposed CIE break-up

The National Bus and Railworkers Union has accused Transport Minister Seamus Brennan of "a shameless act of treachery" for making public statements about his plans to break up CIE while talks on the matter were on-going.

The NBRU said Mr Brennan’s statements and his subsequent defence of those statements proved that the talks between his officials and the CIE workers had no credibility or integrity.

The union threatened to reinstate its campaign of industrial action because of Mr Brennan’s attitude. Its ruling executive is expected to discuss the matter when it meets tomorrow.

The campaign of action, which began with a "no-fares day" last July, was deferred pending the outcome of the talks between the unions and the Department of Transport.

A spokesperson for the NBRU said the action, if it goes ahead, will affect all CIE companies and could begin within the next two weeks.
