Hundreds arrested in new year brawls

Gardaí around the country made several hundred arrests overnight.

Most followed public order offences after New Year celebrations got out of hand.

One of the most serious incidents involved two rival groups who were involved in a row in the Coolock area of Dublin.

Five people were injured in the melée, which started after claims that someone was interfering with a car.
