Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a fatal assault on Patrick St in Dundalk shortly before 12.35am this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a fatal assault on Patrick St in Dundalk shortly before 12.35am this morning.

The body of a 59-year-old man was found on the street and gardaí say the injuries that he died from are consistent with an assault.

The body is still at the scene and the area is being preserved for technical examination.

The services of the State Pathologist have also been requested.

A 30-year-old Dundalk man was arrested this morning in relation to the incident.

He is being detained at Dundalk garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, where he can be held for up to 12 hours.

Gardaí have appealed for information from anyone who was in The Laurels, Bridge St, Patrick St, or Church St area of Dundalk shortly after midnight last night.
