Volunteer work celebrated on special UN day

There has been a call for more people to get involved in voluntary work.

It comes as the United Nations celebrates International Volunteer Day.

The group Volunteering Ireland, which co-ordinates the activities of voluntary organisations, says Ireland depends heavily on voluntary workers, and that events such as the Special Olympics could never have succeeded without the help of volunteers.

Spokeswoman Sandra Velthuis says today is a day to recognise their work, as a lot of voluntary work goes unnoticed.
