Spanish trawler escorted to port after on-board fire

The lifeboat service on Achill Island was called out this morning to help a Spanish fishing trawler that reported a fire on board at around 5am.

The British-registered Norte was 10 miles off the coast of Achill when the blaze broke out in the hold area of the boat.

The fire was initially brought under control, but it started against a short time later and the Achill lifeboat escorted the trawler to Killybegs.

Sixteen crewmen were on board at the time.
