Irishman arrested in Japanese drug bust

The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the case of a 22-year-old Irishman arrested in Japan for allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana into the country.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is monitoring the case of a 22-year-old Irishman arrested in Japan for allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana into the country.

The man was arrested on October 1 after arriving at Narita airport on a flight from South Africa, via London.

A spokesman for the local police said he was detained on suspicion of carrying 17kgs of marijuana in his suitcase.

Irish Embassy officials have organised a lawyer for the man, whose family lives in Japan.
