Connacht/Ulster MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon begins her campaign today to collect signatures to have a reference to God inserted into the proposed EU Constitution.

Her campaign starts in Eyre Square Galway at 11am and moves on to the Square in Tuam at 3pm.

It's hoped to collect one million signatures across Europe as part of the plan.

Dana Scallon says the wider public is surprised that a reference to God has been overlooked.

Dana says the petition and its objectives have significant political backing.
