A man was questioned today about the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

He was detained on the northern outskirts of the city by detectives belonging to a team headed by London Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens.

Mr Finucane was shot dead in front of his wife and family when Ulster Defence Association gunmen burst into his north Belfast home in 1989.

Earlier this year, a former UDA man from north Belfast Ken Barrett was arrested in England and charged with Mr Finucane’s murder.

He fled Northern Ireland because of fears that former paramilitary associates were planning to kill him.

No date has been set for the trial.

The man detained today is aged 34. He will also face questions by the Stevens team probing allegations that loyalists working as agents for military intelligence and RUC Special Branch were involved in the Finucane murder.
