The Government has announced plans to impose punitive taxes on undeveloped land to force developers to release it on to the market for new housing.

The Taoiseach hopes that such a move will boost the supply of new homes to the market and said speculation that the Government might impose such a tax had already prompted builders to release new sites for house building.
