Man arrested on suspicion of murder
Two men were being questioned in Northern Ireland today about the murder of a young man.
The 21-year-old victim died after a violent assault in Cookstown, Co Tyrone at about 2am.
A man in his early 20s was arrested on suspicion of murder, said police, and a second man was detained later and was also being questioned about the incident.
Police said the killing was not thought to have a sectarian motive.
The victim, whose name has not been released, is understood to come from the Cookstown area.
Police Service Inspector Alan Cole said detectives wanted to hear from anyone who was in the Molesworth Street area of the town between 2am and 2.30am.
“Any little piece of information may be of use to our inquiry,” he said.
Local SDLP councillor Patsy McGlone said the community had been shocked by the killing.
“I’m sad and sorry at the circumstances of this incident,” he said.
Mr McGlone added: “It has had a profound impact on the whole community, but particularly the families concerned.”.
