INTO wants reduced class sizes as promised

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation has called on the Government to honour its commitment to reduce class sizes.

The organisation said Irish classroom sizes are currently the highest in Europe, with the majority of schoolchildren in classes of 30 pupils or more.

INTO president Sean Rowley said the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition had promised to reduce class sizes for children under the age of nine to 20 or less.

“They have so far only managed to reduce the class size by two,” he said. “There has been no improvement over the past two years.”
