Gardaí to get new powers under proposed legislation

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is due to publish legislation today giving the gardaí the power to demand DNA samples from suspects in criminal investigations.

The proposed Criminal Justice Bill also extends the maximum period of time that gardaí can detain a suspect before he or she must be charged or released.
