New speed limits to be introduced next year

The Government is reportedly planning to overhaul the speed limits on Irish roads.

Reports this morning said the limit on single-lane country roads and in some urban areas would be reduced by around 10mph, while the limit on motorways would be increased to up to 75mph.

The reform of speed limits was recommended by a government review group. Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said last night that he would move to bring in the changes from next June.

The review group said the new limits should be introduced when Ireland changes from miles-per-hour to metric measurement next year.
