SDLP and Garda Commissioner to hold 'historic' meeting

An SDLP delegation is due to meet Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne today to discuss policing reform on both sides of the border.

The party said the meeting is the first between a Northern political party and a serving Garda Commissioner.

SDLP spokesman Alex Atwood said he believed the meeting was historic and highly significant.

The two sides are expected to discuss all-Ireland policing initiatives, garda entry into the PSNI and a common strategy to tackle organised crime on both sides of the border.
