Taoiseach urged to state position on smoking ban

The Labour Party has called on the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, to show political leadership on the issue of banning smoking in all workplaces.

Health Minister Micheál Martin is planning to introduce the ban in January, but he has met extreme opposition from publicans, hoteliers and restaurateurs, who claim the ban will lead to a loss of business.

Several Fianna Fáil TDs have also expressed their opposition to the ban, including Environment Minister Martin Cullen and Agriculture Minister Joe Walsh.

Labour spokesperson Liz McManus said: "It's very important that somebody take charge here.

"The Taoiseach has been absolutely silent on the issue.

"We need to hear from the Taoiseach what his Government is doing in relation to this ban, whether he is supporting his Minister for Health or whether he is going with those who have now come out against the ban."
