Numbers of elderly in care to double

The number of elderly people in need of continuous care in Ireland will almost double in the next 50 years, according to a report published today.

The Mercer Human Resources study said the number of elderly people needing continuous care would increase from its current figure of 77,000 to 150,000 by 2051.

The report recommended that long-term care should be financed through social insurance.
