Real IRA claims responsibility for weekend bomb

The so-called Real IRA has claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing in Derry at the weekend.

Police are seriously concerned the group could strike again.

The massive 1,200 lb van bomb, primed and ready to detonate, was found close to the new Foyle Bridge early on Sunday.

It was twice the size of the Omagh bomb and could have caused widespread loss of life.

Police say an alert patrol noticed the van moving suspiciously, but will not say exactly what caused the concern that resulted in the discovery.

It is feared that a Real IRA cell exists in the north-west which is capable of mounting such an attack and willing to risk the loss of life that could result.
