Survey: Drivers regularly break speed limits

Almost half of Irish motorists regularly break the speed limit in urban areas, according to a survey by the National Safety Council.

The survey of driver attitudes also found that one-third of motorists regularly break the speed limit on national roads.

The figures were revealed at the launch of a new series of television ads about the penalty points scheme.

Speaking at the launch, Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne said he believed the scheme, which was introduced last October, was having a positive effect on driving behaviour.
