Four in hospital after Dublin acid spill

Four people were being treated in hospital today after an acid spill, health officials said.

A container of nitric acid fell off a lorry in the Mulhuddart area of west Dublin just before 10am.

Emergency services were called to the scene and 11 people were initially admitted to James Connolly Memorial Hospital.

They were believed to have inhaled fumes from the substance and suffered sore throats and headaches.

A hospital spokesman said seven people were later released. The condition of the remaining patients was not believed to be serious.

Police advised people living in the area to stay indoors.

They said that nitric acid was highly caustic and could be dangerous.

Some local roads were sealed off until 4pm.
