Survey highlights dissatisfaction with Irish exam system

An online survey conducted by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment has found widespread dissatisfaction with the Leaving Cert exams.

Just 22% of respondents said they believed the exams offered a good range of assessment methods, while just 32% said they believed the Leaving Cert promoted work-related skills.

Many others said the Irish language should not be compulsory.

The NCCA is currently preparing proposals for Education Minister Noel Dempsey on ways to reform the Leaving Cert to make it more relevant to modern life.

Mr Dempsey reportedly favours a move towards continuous assessment and practical work.
