The Irish Water Safety organisation has warned the public not to visit unguarded waterways and beaches this weekend, and to only visit lifeguarded areas instead.

"Our trained lifeguards are qualified professionals who monitor bathing areas and advise on safety awareness and local hazards," an IWS spokesman said as the June Bank Holiday approached.

"Lifeguards will address the public's concerns on water safety and will act rapidly in an emergency.

"Many people swimming this weekend may do so in unfamiliar places where the picture-postcard scenes can often mask hidden dangers.

"The risk of local hazards such as strong currents and hidden obstructions present a clear risk."
