The Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy says his colleague Noel Dempsey has managed to get a good deal from the Exchequer for third level fees.

Yesterday, Education Minister Noel Dempsey unveiled a €42m package, which included a significant increase in grants for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The deal includes €15m from the State with the remainder from the private sector.

Mr McCreevy says Noel Dempsey did well under the circumstances.

"The Minister has succeeded in getting a very attractive package for those who have children hoping to attend third level. I think most objective commentators will welcome any improvements."
