Northern Ireland will be among the hardest hit regions if Britain's Chancellor Gordon Brown gets his way and the EU regional aid system is scrapped after 2006, it was claimed today.

Michel Barnier, European Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, said Ulster had “undoubtedly benefited” from EU finds but all that could end if the UK government prevailed.
