PSNI officers escape Armagh bomb attack

Police escaped injury in a bomb attack on their patrol car in Armagh, it was disclosed today.

A coffee jar bomb was thrown at them while they were responding to a call from a member of the public late last night.

The device struck and cracked the windscreen of the car as it travelled along the Monaghan Road in the city but failed to explode.

The two officers in the vehicle were shaken but managed to drive on.

British army bomb disposal experts worked through the night and gave the all clear this morning after defusing the bomb.

Police branded the attack cowardly attempted murder.

Inspector William Gillespie said the attack in a residential area was “reckless” and the attempted murder of his officers as they tried to help the public served no purpose.
